Itemba

This documentary work explores the lives of survivors at Eswatini's only specialised care centre for girls and young women who have experienced sexual trauma. Through a collaborative three-month arts program, 40 participants engaged in self-expression workshops, culminating in a series of annotated self-portraits. Each image features deliberately obscured eyes, allowing participants to share their stories while maintaining their dignity and privacy. The project emerged in response to Eswatini's stark reality, where 48% of women report experiencing sexual violence in their lifetime, and one in three females face sexual abuse before age 18.

The work aims to break the culture of silence surrounding gender-based violence while honouring the resilience of these survivors. The centre uniquely accommodates both survivors and their children, providing a crucial safe haven in a country where such resources are scarce.

Itemba means hope or trust in Siswati, the language of those involved in this project.
